I was wondering how the team is going to be formed. Is there an expansion draft where you take like a player from each ECHL team? – Jim Staton (Northwood, OH)
Jim, thanks for the question and I hope all is well. I wish there would be an expansion draft at our level but unfortunately there is not. The Walleye will be made up of players that are recruited to Toledo from Junior, College and Minor Pro hockey. I’ve put together a scouting staff to see games in different areas and send in reports on players that would be of interest to me. I personally scout many games at both the Amateur and Minor Pro level to evaluate players who would be of interest. We hope that once an affiliate is in place that we would be able to have a few players sent our way from them.
Do you feel that the new arena will result in the city of Toledo being rejuvenated with a love of hockey? As I attended Storm games as a kid, it was always a packed house....as I grew older the attendance seemed to decline. – Brad Cox (Maumee, OH)
Brad, I really do believe the new arena will be just that, an opportunity for Toledo hockey fans to rejuvenate their love for the sport. As great as the old Sports Arena was, there were a lot of people who stopped attending on a regular basis towards the end. I believe the new arena will bring back the long-time Toledo hockey fans AND produce new ones. The track record that Mr. Napoli and his staff have in the sports industry here in Toledo speaks for itself. I feel this will be a great time in professional hockey here in Toledo.
What do you think about the official Walleye on-ice jerseys? – Kelly Thomas (Cleveland, OH)
I really like them. I think that Craig Katz and his staff did a remarkable job in designing our game jerseys. A lot of people in the community have expressed their pleasure with them as well. The Swamp Shop has all kinds of great Toledo Walleye merchandise for sale. Thanks for the question, Kelly.
What do you want for Christmas? – Chris Cringle (North Pole)
Not too many people would agree with me…but I want cold weather and lots of snow! I’m trying to build a skating rink for my son and the cold weather is very helpful. Besides that, I’ll take three 6'4 tough, hard-nosed, puck-moving defenseman for next year!
That being said, happy holidays to everyone! See you in 2009!
