Furious Comeback Falls Short in Third Against Wheeling; Walleye Home Friday Night
The Nailers would score three times in the first period to lead Toledo 3-0 after one period of play. Mikeal Bedard starting the scoring at 6:38 when he beat Joe Palmer with a wrist shot from the right circle. Tyler Murovich scored a shorthanded goal with 31 seconds left in the first to cap the scoring.
“Falling behind has been our nemesis all season long,” said Head Coach Nick Vitucci. “Teams are too good in this league to come back on night in night out. These guys never quit and I am so proud of how much they battled in this game.”
The Nailers scored early in the second period to make it 4-0 Nailers. Toledo would score 13:39 of the second when Maxime Tanguay made a perfect pass in front to Sebastien Piche who buried it for his 11th goal of the season. The Walleye would get another before the period was done as Mike Hedden blocked a blue line shot in his own zone to force a breakaway. Hedden then beat Patrick Killeen between the pads for his team-leading 30th goal of the year.
Randy Rowe scored his 19th goal of the season at 7:21 of the third period to pull the Walleye within one goal at 4-3. Toledo would tie the game at 13:12 of the third when Andy Bohmbach slipped a one hander past Killeen for his 26th goal of the year.
Wheeling rounded out the scoring at the 17:09 mark with a goal from DeFazio.
Walleye Notes: Walleye goaltender Joe Palmer, making his first start since February 27th, made 28 saves and is 9-13-1 on the season. Toledo out shot Wheeling 35-33 for the game.
