Kalamazoo tops Toledo in first preseason game

The two teams exchanged quality chances in the first period, but the game remained scoreless. David Gilbert had the best chance for Toledo, but his backhand shot was stopped by Kalamazoo goaltender Joel Martin.

“I liked the way we worked as a unit tonight,” said Head Coach Nick Vitucci. “We were extremely crisp for only having two days of practice before this game.”

It would be the Kalamazoo Wings that would strike first as Matt Caria tipped a blue line shot past goaltender Brooks Ostergard at 4:28 of second period. Kalamazoo would make it 2-0 at 6:18 when Dan Dries scored a shorthanded goal off of a steal in the Toledo zone.

With 9:25 left in the second period both teams switched goaltenders as Neil Conway came in for Toledo and Russ Stein for Kalamazoo. The second period with no more scoring and the Wings held a 14-4 shot advantage in the frame.

Toledo would close the gap to one at 2:02 of third period when forward Nikita Poliakov tapped in a rebound. The assists went to Tyler Pilmore and Nick DeMarchi. The Wings would pull away after that scoring three unanswered goals for a 5-1 lead.

Walleye Notes:  Goaltender Brooks Ostergard made 12 saves on 14 shots in net for Toledo and Neil Conway finished with 18 saves on 21 shots.
