
All-Stars Sawyer And Tanguay Score, But Walleye Fall To K-Zoo, 6-3
1/2/2010 - (Kalamazoo, MI)– The Toledo Walleye were defeated on Saturday 6-3 by the Kalamazoo Wings. Toledo’s record is 17-13-1-3 on the season, and they are 5-5-1-2 on the road.
Jeff Mason, the hero of Friday night for the Wings, started the scoring for Kalamazoo at 3:23 of the first when his wrist shot beat Thomas McCollum for a 1-0 lead. Toledo would tie the game at one when JC Sawyer’s wrist shot from the top of the circles beat goaltender Ryan Nie at 5:44 (Dominic Osman, Malcolm MacMillan). At 16:24 of the first and while short-handed, Chris Robertson collected a steal at the Walleye blue line and led a two on one with Derek Nesbitt. Robertson made a perfect pass to Nesbitt for a one-timer that beat Nie for his fifth goal of the season.
The second period saw the Kalamazoo Wings strike twice to take a 3-2 lead. At 11:32 Sam Ftorek beat McCollum on the power play. A turnover with :19 seconds left in the second allowed Kalamazoo to take the lead as Rick Cleaver wristed a shot past McCollum.
Kalamazoo would make it 4-2 at 5:38 of the third when Brian Jurynec slid a shot past McCollum. At 15:29, Darryl Bootland finished another Kalamazoo rush with a wrist shot past McCollum to make it 5-2. Maxime Tanguay closed the gap to two with 1:45 left in the third with his 12th goal of the season (Luis Tremblay, Evan Rankin). Trent Daavettila would add an empty net goal for the final.
Walleye Notes: Derek Nesbitt’s goal was the ninth short-handed goal of the year for Toledo, tying the Walleye with Alaska for the most short-handed goals in the ECHL. Thomas McCollum made 32 saves in his first start with the Walleye.
