Walleye To Pay Tribute to the History of Hockey in Toledo on March 6 and 7!

1/27/2010 - The Toledo Walleye will be paying tribute to the history of hockey in Toledo on March 6 and March 7 with Hockey History Weekend presented by the Toledo Blade.

SATURDAY, MARCH 6

On Saturday March 6, The Toledo Walleye will be honoring the Toledo Blades (1963-1970), the Toledo Hornets (1970-1974), and the Toledo Goaldiggers (1974-1986).

Schedule of events:

5:30 pm: Doors open
5:30 pm - 6:30 pm: Autographs on the main concourse
6:45 pm - Pre-game ceremony - includes Championship Banner raising and player recognition
7:00 pm - Game Time!

Former players expected to appear on Saturday:

  • Glenn Ramsay - Toledo Blades (1963-1970), Toledo Hornets (1970-1974) - Hockey News said he was “the best goalie to ever play in the IHL”, played on a record nine IHL All Star teams, won the Norris Trophy - awarded to the goalie with the best goals against mark for the season - 6 times
  • Bill Joyce - Toledo Goaldiggers (1981-1985) - Once held the Toledo Professional Hockey’s all time single season assist mark with 72
  • Doug Mahood - Toledo Goaldiggers (1974-1977) - He was part of the famous rough, tough line known as Murder, Inc.
  • Jerry Badiuk - Toledo Goaldiggers (1976-1978)
  • Jim Hunter - Toledo Goaldiggers (1985-1986)
  • Jim McCabe - Toledo Goaldiggers (1974-1980)
  • Philip Williams - Toledo Goaldiggers - President the first year the Goaldiggers won the Turner Cup, 1974
  • Bob McBroom - Toledo Hornets (1970-1971)
  • Gary Wyse - Manager of Sports Arena

SUNDAY, MARCH 7

On Sunday March 7, the Toledo Walleye will honor the early years of Toledo Hockey including the Toledo Mercurys (1947-1962) and the Toledo Buckeyes (1949-1950) as well as the most recent period in Toledo Hockey, the Toledo Storm (1991-2007).

Both nights will include the unveiling of the championship banners for the respective teams, pre-game autographs by former players, and book signings of the book “Hockey Night in Toledo”, written by The Blade.
