
Walleye Drop Contest to Wheeling, 5-3; Return Home Wednesday, January 12
1/9/2011 - (Wheeling, WV)– The Walleye roared back to tie Wheeling, but the Nailers pulled away in the third to defeat Toledo 5-3. Toledo is 13-16-2-1 on the season and 6-8-2-0 on the road. Toledo is now 1-2-0-0 against Wheeling this year.
The Nailers would jump in front of Toledo 2-0 with goals from Joey Haddad at 11:09 and Nick Peterson at 13:21. Toledo would get on the board just 38 seconds later when Dominic Osman collected his 6th goal of the year on a rebound. Defenseman Jason Lepine fired a shot that hit the back wall and bounced right to Osman. Forward Chris DiDomenico also collected an assist on the goal. Osman has a goal in four straight and five of his last six games.
“I was pleased with this weekend even with a shorthanded roster,” said Head Coach Nick Vitucci. “The effort we showed today was terrific against the top team in our division. It's unfortunate we couldn't get this one in as a win."
The Nailers would go up by two once again at 3:13 when Casey Pierro-Zabotel bested Walleye goaltender Thomas McCollum. Toledo would counter at 6:27 when Kyle Rogers deflected a great pass from Sal Peralta past goaltender Patrick Killeen for his 5th goal of the year. The Walleye would tie the game at three at 13:23 when Simon Danis-Pepin slid a perfect pass to Andy Bohmbach who scored his team-leading 14th goal of the year.
Wheeling would take a 4-3 just 46 seconds into the third period when Pierro-Zabotel beat McCollum for a second time. The Nailers would add an empty net goal in the last minute to ice it.
Walleye Notes:
-Walleye goaltender Thomas McCollum made 25 saves and is 3-1-0-0 on the season for Toledo. -Prior to the game, defenseman Simon Danis-Pepin was assigned to the Walleye from the Rockford IceHogs of the AHL. In 20 games with the IceHogs, Danis-Pepin had one goal with two assists.
