Toledo Downed by the Stingrays, 3-1; Walleye Back Home Saturday Night

3/18/2011 - (Toledo, OH)-The Toledo Walleye were defeated by the South Carolina Stingrays 3-1 on Friday night at the Huntington Center in front of 6,011 fans. The Walleye are now 29-30-3-2 on the season and are 14-16-1-1 at the Huntington Center.
Toledo put some early pressure on the Stingrays, registering four shots on South Carolina goaltender Shane Owen in the first 3:00 of the first period, but neither team was able to put the puck in the net by the end of the first period.
The Walleye registered 10 shots on goal in the first period and goaltender Thomas McCollum stopped all 8 that were sent his way.
With 13:24 to go in the middle period, Andy Bohmbach got a break to the net that was stopped by Owen.
At 14:32 of the period, Chase Langeraap put the Stingrays on the board to take a 1-0 lead.
As the period came to a close, the Walleye were able to put a flurry of shots on the South Carolina net, but Owen was able to stop each one to keep the Fish off the board.
Toledo out shot the Stingrays for the second straight period 13-6 and Toledo killed off their only penalty of the period.
South Carolina took a 2-0 lead early in the third period when Pierre-Luc O’Brien put a puck behind McCollum.
Evan Rankin would cut the Stingrays lead in half, slamming home a loose puck past Owen at with 2:26 to go in the final period.
South Carolina’s Matt Scherer added an empty net goal to make the final score 3-1.
Walleye Wrap-Up
-Walleye goaltender Thomas McCollum saved 14 of 16 shots and is 8-8-1 for the Fish this season.
-Toledo out shot the Stingrays 36-17.
-Evan Rankin notched his 18th goal of the season during the game tonight.
