Walleye drop weekend finale to the Stingrays, 3-2
1/8/2012 - (Toledo, OH)-The Toledo Walleye had goals scored by forwards Andrej Nestrasil and Joey Martin, but it was not enough as Toledo dropped the weekend finale to the South Carolina Stingrays, 3-2 at the Huntington Center. Toledo stands at 13-18-0-1 overall and 8-10-0-1 on home ice.
Toledo’s Andrej Nestrasil opened up the scoring at 4:28 of the first period on the power play. Nestrasil put a shot past South Carolina goaltender Philip Grubauer just as the South Carolina penalty was expiring. Forward Brian Matte and defenseman Bryan Rufenach picked up the assists on the goal.
The Stingrays tied the game up at the 10:25 mark of the first after David de Kastrozza knocked his own rebound behind Toledo goaltender Rob Nolan.
Forward Joey Martin answered right back for the Walleye, regaining a one goal lead. Forward Paul Zanette and defenseman Phil Rauch assisted on the go ahead goal for Toledo that came 11:28 of the opening period.
The Walleye sent 13 shots on goal during the first period of play.
South Carolina picked up the only goal of the second period, after Pierre-Luc O’Brien got a shot behind Nolan to tie the game up at 7:32.
O’Brien picked up his second goal of the game, getting a shot in off of a Toledo player at 3:36 of the third period, giving South Carolina a 3-2 lead.
Walleye Wrap-Up:
-Walleye goaltender Rob Nolan stopped 23 of 26 shots on goal and is 6-11-1 overall this season.
-Toledo went 1 for 4 on the power play.
-The Walleye out shot the Stingrays 29-26 over the course of the game.
