
Walleye downed by Wheeling; pick up a point
1/11/2012 - (Wheeling, WV)– Toledo collected a point, but lost to the Nailers 3-2 in overtime. Toledo is 13-18-1-1 on the season and 5-8-1-0 away from home.
A very entertaining first period of play saw the two teams combine for 18 shots on goal but neither could score. Goaltender Rob Nolan turned aside 10 shots in the opening period.
“The message tonight was to come out, be physical and aggressive,” said Head Coach Nick Vitucci. “That type of play really opens up the game for us. That was the best game we have played in some time. Unfortunatly we didn’t win it.”
Toledo would get on the scoreboard first when Paul Zanette scored his third goal of the season at 6:55 of the second period. Joey Martin fed Zanette the puck, which used a great one-timer to blast it past Wheeling goaltender Peter Delmas. The Nailers would tie the game at one when Matt Lombardi beat Nolan with a perfect wrist shot at 11:14 of the period.
Toledo would regain the lead at 9:40 of the third period when Martin scored his ninth goal of the season. The Nailers would tie the game at two just :28 later. In overtime, former Walleye forward Zack Torquato beat Nolan with a wrist shot to win it for Wheeling.
Walleye Notes: Walleye goaltender Rob Nolan finished with 29 saves and is 6-11-2-0 on the season. Toledo is 9-8-1-1 this season when scoring the first goal of the game.
