Toledo takes down Reading to win 2-1!




2/2/2013 - (Toledo, OH)-Randy Rowe and Travis Novak each scored a goal tonight as the Toledo Walleye defeated the conference leading Reading Royals 2-1 at the Huntington Center on Saturday night. Toledo is now on a five game winning streak and has won four straight at home. The Walleye are now 26-17-0-4 overall this season and are 13-7-0-3 on home ice.

Randy Rowe would score his 10th goal of the season 11:40 into the opening period by backhanding a rebound across the Reading goal line. Pat Knowlton and Kyle Rogers assisted on the goal that put the Walleye up 1-0 over the Royals.

Toledo goaltender Kent Simpson made several key saves through the first period of play, stopping all eight shots on goal he faced. The Walleye sent 13 shots at Reading netminder Drew MacIntyre.

The second period saw a lot of back and forth action with a couple of fights coming midway through the second period. A big open ice hit from Cody Lampl caused Reading to take exception and drop the gloves with Toledo.

Toledo would take a 2-0 lead on a shorthanded goal from Travis Novak that came shorthanded. Novak took a pass from Adam Hobson and skated down the left wing board with :20 to play in the second period.

The Walleye put 16 shots on MacIntyre in the middle period and Simpson continued his solid play, stopping nine Reading shots.

Hobson was taken down on a breakaway and was then awarded a penalty shot. MacIntyre made the save on Hobson to keep Toledo’s lead at 2-0. Andrej Nestrasil was also awarded a penalty shot after he was taken down. Nestrasil’s shot missed the net.

Reading would finally solve Simpson with 15 seconds left to play in regulation, as Toledo beat the Reading Royals, 2-1.
