Third period sinks Walleye in Wheeling

(Wheeling, WV) Mathew Santos scored once with an assist but the Walleye fell 5-2 in Wheeling on Wednesday night. Toledo has an overall record of 26-7-0-1 and is 15-5-0-0 on the road.
Wheeling and Toledo traded chances on goal in the first period of play with neither finding the back of the net. The Walleye were outshot 11-9 in the opening frame. The power plays for each team would strike in the second period. Evan Rankin (14th) deflected a blue line shot from Nolan Zajac into the Wheeling net at 2:40 to put the Walleye in front 1-0. Wheeling countered to tie the game at 9:39.
In the third period, Wheeling would take the lead at 7:10 with another power play goal. Just 38 seconds later Gage Quinney tucked in a rebound past Steve Racine for a 3-1 Nailers lead. Toledo countered when Mathew Santos (3rd) ripped a wrist shot through Sean Maquire at 10:44 of the third period. Nailers picked up another goal at 15:48 for a 4-2 lead.
Walleye Notes: Goaltender Steve Racine made his first start as a member of the Walleye and stopped 27 of the 31 shots he face and his overall record of 0-3-0-0 this season. Toledo is 2-3-0 vs. the Nailers this season.
