Walleye power past Wheeling
(Toledo, OH) A standing room only crowd of 8,065 watched Tyson Spink score twice in a 4-3 Walleye win over Wheeling Friday night at the Huntington Center. Toledo has an overall record of 27-7-0-1 and is 12-2-0-1 at home.
Wheeling and Toledo combined to score three goals in the first 8:36 of the first period. The Nailers picked up two of those with Nolan Zajac (6th) lighting the lamp on a one-timer at 7:32 for the lone goal for the Walleye in the first.
Toledo started to roll in the second period as the power play heated up. Tyson Spink blasted in his team –leading 16th goal of the season at 4:55 to tie the game at 2. At 12:18 of the second, Evan Rankin (15th) sent in a backhander for Toledo’s second power play goal and 3-2 Walleye lead.
Spink scored his second of the game at 6:14 of the third period to give Toledo a 4-2 lead. The Nailers inched closer with a goal at 13:01 but the Walleye held them at bay after that point. Toledo finished the game 2-7 on the power play.
Walleye Notes: Goaltender Jake Paterson stopped 23 of the 26 shots he face and his overall record of 17-5-0-1 this season. Toledo is 3-3-0 vs. the Nailers this season. Toledo has a record of 13-5-0-1 when allowing the first goal of a game.
