Walleye shoot down Komets 4-3!
(Ft. Wayne, IN)– The Toledo Walleye start the 2013-14 season with a 4-3 shootout win tonight in Fort Wayne.
The Komets would get an early power play and they would cash in as Mickey Lang slapped a one-timer past Mac Carruth at 1:29 of the first period. Toledo would tie the game when Scott Arnold ripped a shot past goaltender John Muse at 8:20 of the first period. Aaron Bogosian and Bobby Shea collected the assists on the goal.
“The first game of the season is always special,” said Head Coach Nick Vitucci. “We knew they would come out swarming early and we were able to get through that. It was a battle all the way throughout.”
Toledo would grab the lead at 2:53 of the second period when Trevor Parkes deflected a Fort Wayne pass behind Muse for an unassisted goal. The Walleye would hold the lead until 16:39 of the second period, when Chris Auger beat Carruth with a wrist shot from the top of circles.
Travis Novak would put the Walleye back in front 3-2 at 2:52 of the third period when blasted in a rebound off of Trevor Parkes shot. Lang would tip in a rebound for Fort Wayne at 15:30 of the third period to tie the game.
Toledo would get goals from Daniel Koger and Scott Arnold in the shootout, while Mac Carruth stopped four of five shooters from the Komets.
Walleye Notes: Goaltender Mac Carruth made 32 saves on 35 shots in net for Toledo for his first professional win. Toledo was 7-3-1 against the Komets last season. The two rivals play a total of nine times this year.
