Walleye start fast and take down Mallards
(Moline, IL) A.J. Jenks scored late in the second period to put the Walleye in front for good in a 3-2 season opening Friday night in Quad City. Toledo has a record of 1-0-0-0 and is 1-0-0-0 on the road. The Walleye are in Fort Wayne Saturday night.
Toledo started with a bang scoring twice in the first 2:24 of the first period. Defenseman Patrick McCarron carried the puck from his own zone all the way into the Mallards end and went high to the blocker side on Quad City goaltender C.J. Motte for a 1-0 lead at 1:55. Connor Crisp tapped in a rebound at 2:24 to push the Walleye lead to 2-0. Quad City cut into the Walleye lead with 3:10 left in the first period on a pass that was deflected past Pat Nagle.
The Mallards were able to tie the game at 11:42 when forward Tristen King beat Nagle on a rebound. At 15:02 of the second frame, A.J. Jenks jumped on a loose puck and wristed a shot through Motte to regain the lead for the Walleye. Toledo outshot the Mallards 10-4 in the third period, controlling the play to seal the victory.
Fish Tales: Goaltender Pat Nagle made his Walleye debut and stopped 20 of the Mallards 22 shots and is 1-0-0-0 on the season. The win evened the Walleye record in season opening games to 4-4-1. Toledo is 1-0-0-0 for the first time since the 2013-14 season.
