Walters powers Toledo over Fort Wayne in OT

Dane Walters netted the OT winner as the Walleye knocked out Fort Wayne by a score of 4-3 on Saturday night in a Game 2 win. Game 3 will be played in Fort Wayne on Wednesday.

All Tyson Spink needed was 22 seconds to get the home team on the board when he put one in the back of the net on a breakaway give-and-go with brother Tylor Spink. That was Tyson’s fifth of the postseason. Fort Wayne went 0-1 on the power play in the first. They held the edge in shots over Toledo, 15-9.

Toledo held a 5-on-3 man advantage to start the second period, but failed to convert. They recorded three shots on the power play. Fort Wayne evened the score with 11:20 remaining in the second. The Walleye retook the lead with 45 seconds remaining in the second on a Kyle Bonis breakaway, his seventh of the postseason.

Fort Wayne tied the game once again with 15:43 remaining in the third. Dane Walters put the home team back in front with about six minutes remaining in the third when he beat Fort Wayne goaltender Pat Nagle. That was his second of the postseason. Fort Wayne found the equalizer at three with 20 seconds to go.

Dane Walters netted his second of the game in overtime one minute in.

Walleye notes: Jeff Lerg stopped 38 of the 41 shots he faced. A sold out crowd of 8,000 witness the Walleye take a 2-0 series lead.
