Defenseman Brock Beukeboom (boo-ka-boom) and Forward Colin Martin have agreed to terms with the Toledo Walleye for the 2017-18 season.
The rights to Martin were picked up by the Walleye in a future consideration trade with the Utah Grizzlies. In 47 games this past season, the London, Ontario native scored 22 goals with 11 assists with 43 penalty minutes. He also posted one assist and six penalty minutes over four playoff contests.
“Martin is coming off an excellent first pro season said Head Coach Dan Watson. “He has a goal scorer’s touch around the net with the ability to battle in the corners.”
Prior to turning professional, he spent four years at St. University in Canada, appearing in 99 games with 57 points (23G, 34A) and 246 penalty minutes. From 2008 through 2012, the 26-year-old was a member of the London Knights of the OHL with 84 points (36G, 48A) with 193 penalty minutes. As an Assistant Captain for London in 2011-12, he helped guide the Knights to an OHL Championship with nine points (3G, 6A) and a plus 17 rating.
Beukeboom, son of former NHL Defenseman Jeff Beukeboom, was drafted in the third round (#63 overall) by the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2010 while he was a member of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. The 6’2”, 215-pound defenseman has spent the last four years playing at the University of Prince Edward Island in Canada appearing in 96 games with seven goals, 17 assists and 123 penalty minutes.
”Brock has an excellent lineage to pull from but his play stands on its own,” said Watson. “He will bring a lot to our defense this upcoming season.”
The 25-year-old played in 279 games in the OHL between Sault Ste. Marie, Niagara and Guelph from 2008 through 2013. He scored 16 career goals (including seven in 2009-10) with 67 assists, 233 penalty minutes and a career plus 18. He was the captain of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in the 2010-11 season and also has a gold medal from the 2008-2009 Under 17 World Hockey Championships winning team from Canada.
