Walleye Notes

Burnt Out: The Toledo Walleye fell in their season opener vs. the Fort Wayne Komets, a storied matchup dating back to their first game in 1952, with a final score of 6-3. Toledo’s power play went 1-for-5 on the night and 5-for-6 on the penalty kill. Sam Craggs had an assist in addition to his first goal, Campbell Cichosz had his first assist of the season, Marcus Crawford notched his first point back with the Walleye, Brandon Kruse had an assist, and Kaden Bohlsen recorded a pair of apples. Carter Gylander took the loss in the season opener, turning away 27 of the 32 shots he faced.

First: Sam Craggs scored Toledo’s first goal of the season in Saturday’s contest at Fort Wayne, the first time in his ECHL career that he’s opened his season with a point. Craggs has produced against the Komets consistently, scoring 14 goals and 17 assists (31 total points) in 43 games against the division rival, scoring a power play goal, two short-handed goals, and two game-winning goals. The BGSU alum played 70 games last season, his third consecutive season with at least 70 games played (playing all 72 in 2024-25 and 70 in 2023-24). He’s notched 74 goals and 89 assists (163 total points) in his career with Toledo.

Twice is Nice: Tanner Dickinson scored Toledo’s second and third goals of the season, posting the team’s first multi-goal game from a player of the season. The Perrysburg, OH native lit the lamp twice in four games last season, once against Fort Wayne on February 7 and most recently on April 3 at Kalamazoo. Dickinson has played 10 games in his career against Fort Wayne, scoring seven points (four goals, three assists) with a pair of power-play goals and two game-winning goals.

MVPs Unite!: The Walleye roster features the recipients of each of the last three ECHL Most Valuable Player Award. Forward Brandon Hawkins became just the second player in league history to win the award back-to-back seasons, doing so in 2023-24 and 2024-25, and finished runner-up last season after leading the ECHL in shots (300) and power-play goals (14) and placing second in points (78), goals (35) and power-play points (32). The reigning ECHL MVP defenseman Marcus Crawford joins the fold in Toledo on assignment from the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins. The veteran defenseman returns to the Pond for the first time since the 2019-20 season. He is coming off of a 2025-26 campaign that saw him claim Defenseman of the Year and a spot on the All-ECHL First Team in addition to his MVP win. He led the ECHL in points (86), assists (72), power-play points (39), power-play assists (33) and placed second in +/- (+49). In addition to his previous rankings, he led all defensemen in goals (14) and game-winning goals (5).

Fuel and Wheels: The Walleye are set to play a pair of games on the road next weekend, heading to Indy for the first matchup of the season on Friday and then travelling to Wheeling to play the Nailers on Saturday. The Walleye collected points in all six games they played against Indy last season, posting four wins and two shootout losses in the six contests. Mitch Lewandowski has posted over a point per game against the Fuel, scoring 17 points (five goals, 12 assists) in 13 games over his career. Against Wheeling, the Walleye posted a 2-1-0-1 record the last time that both teams were members of the Central Division (2023-24), and a 1-2-0-0 record against the Nailers last season, getting the win in the last of the three games the two teams faced off in. Brandon Hawkins has 47 points (22 goals, 25 assists) in his 43 career games against Wheeling, and Garrett Van Wyhe has four goals and three assists, including a game-winning goal, in five games against the Nailers.
