Game Story | Walleye win 5-2 in second straight road victory

Wheeling, West Virginia - The Toledo Walleye brought home their second straight victory against the Wheeling Nailers, 5-2. Mitch Lewandowski scored the first goal of the night, followed by third period goals from Dickinson, Bohlsen, Bertuzzi, and Funk.

Here's how it happened:

The Nailers wasted no time, scoring their first goal of the game with a bullet from #27 Remy Parker and assisted by #8 Kevin Gursoy. Toledo regrouped and answered with a goal of their own at 11:53, an unassisted score by #67 Mitch Lewandowski, tying the game at 1-1. Although unable to capitalize on a pair of power plays, the Walleye closed the period and held the Nailers to only 8 shots on goal.

Toledo began the second period with a 4 on 5 after a slashing call on Garrett Van Wyhe late into the first period, but the Nailers were unable to score with the man advantage. The first half of the period was quiet until Wheeling scored the only goal of the second period at 10:39, this time by #93 Justin Taylor with assists by #26 Dustin Geregach and #21 Craig Armstrong. The second period ended with 9 shots on goal by Wheeling, and 15 by Toledo.

After a slow second period, Toledo came out of the gates swinging with 2 goals in the first half. #12 Tanner Dickinson scored his first of the night at 4:09, assisted by #67 Mitch Lewandowski and #16 Brandon Hawkins, tying the game 2-2. Only a few minutes later and under a 4 on 5, #26 Kaden Bohlsen broke away with the puck and scored a shorthand goal for the Walleye. This gave the Walleye their first lead of the game with 11:44 left to play.

Toledo didn't stop there. #84 Tag Bertuzzi scored his third goal of the season and put Toledo ahead 4-2, assisted by #7 Sam Craggs and #15 Marcus Crawford. Wheeling pulled their goaltender in an attempt to even the score, but #22 Reilly Funk put the nail in the coffin with an empty net goal, and an assist by #24 Nick Nardecchia.
