Walleye Notes
Successful Weekend Trip: The Toledo Walleye took victories in both of their games this past weekend, beating the Indy Fuel by a score of 5-2 at Fishers Event Center on Friday, and then traveling to WesBanco Arena in Wheeling to beat the Nailers by the same score. Marcus Crawford notched Toledo’s first three-point game of the season with three assists in Friday’s game, Brandon Hawkins had three points on the weekend, including his first goal of the season, Tag Bertuzzi scored three times between the two contests, and Mitch Lewandowski finished the weekend with a goal and three assists. Jonathan Lemieux made his Walleye debut this past weekend, starting both games. He finished the weekend with a 2-0-0-0 record, posting a .921 save percentage by stopping 51 of the 55 shots on goal he saw.
Endless Chances: The Walleye have seen 18 power-play opportunities through their first three games of the season, the team’s most chances through their first three games since the 2010-11 season (19 chances). In addition, they’ve also incurred their most penalty kills (14) since the first three games of the 2018-19 season (15). The Walleye have converted on four of their 18 power-play chances this year (22.2%, tied for 7th in the ECHL) and killed off 12 of their 14 penalty kills (85.7%, tied for 15th in the ECHL). Tanner Dickinson leads the Walleye in power-play goals so far, scoring two of the team’s four.
In Mid-Season Form: Reigning ECHL MVP defenseman Marcus Crawford has picked up right where he left off, tying for second in the ECHL in assists and points by a defenseman (5, trailing New Mexico’s Derek Daschke’s 6 assists in both categories). Crawford led the league last season with 72 points (14 goals, 72 assists), recording a league-leading 33 of those assists on the power play. Mitch Lewandowski has a goal and three assists on the season so far, placing second on the team in scoring behind Crawford’s five points. Lewandowski finished the 2025-26 season with 44 points (12 goals, 32 assists) after being signed by Toledo in late November, enough for him to finish fifth in scoring on last year’s squad.
Pit Stop: For the second consecutive season, the Walleye collected their first win of the year against the Indy Fuel at Fishers Event Center. Last year's season-opener was also a three-goal victory, with the Walleye taking down the Fuel by a score of 4-1. The special teams units showcased their abilities in game one, as the league-leading power-play went 2-for-4, also notching the first two of a franchise-record 15 short-handed goals the Walleye would go onto score in the 2025-26 season.
Halloweekend: The Walleye are set to play two divisional games this weekend, facing off against the Kalamazoo Wings on Friday night and heading back to Fort Wayne on Halloween day. The Walleye will see the K-Wings for the first time this season, finishing last year with a 5-2-1-0 record against the club. Two of Cooper Zech’s five career ECHL goals came in his ECHL debut against the K-Wings in 2022 as a member of the Indy Fuel. The Walleye see Fort Wayne for the second time this season, looking to improve on their season-opening performance against the division rival.
