Walleye Notes

Weekend on I-69: The Toledo Walleye played two games on the road, beating the Kalamazoo Wings 3-2 in overtime and falling to the Fort Wayne Komets by a score of 2-1 in regulation on Saturday. Tag Bertuzzi scored the game-winner on Friday, Cooper Zech and Kaden Bohlsen each had two points in the contest, and Jonathan Lemieux stopped 17 of 19 shots he faced. Nolan Moyle scored Toledo’s only goal against the Komets on Saturday, the team’s second shorthanded goal of the year. Carter Gylander turned away 28 of the 30 shots he saw.

Shots!: The Walleye came just five shots away from breaking a franchise record in shots on goal for the second consecutive season on Friday. Last season's record-setting high came on March 8 against Wichita, with the team recording 58 shots on goal in the Sunday night contest at the Huntington Center. With 54 shots in Friday night's game against Kalamazoo (now the third-highest mark in franchise history), the Walleye eclipsed the 50-shot mark for the seventh time since they began play in the 2009-10 season.

Late Bloomers: The Walleye boast a 3-2-0-0 record on the season without having scored first in a game yet, tying for the ECHL’s most wins (with Trois-Rivières) for the most wins when conceding the first goal. Toledo stands as one of six teams in the league with a points percentage over .500 when not scoring first, joining Adirondack (2-1-0-0), Bloomington (1-0-0-0), Greenville (2-1-1-0), Trois-Rivières (3-0-1-0), and Wheeling (1-0-2-1). The Walleye finished last season with a 10-13-4-1 record when giving up the first goal (.466 Pts%), posting an astounding 33-4-3-4 record when striking first last year (the league’s fourth-most wins when doing so).

Here’s Jonny: Goaltender Jonathan Lemieux has quickly become a brick wall for Toledo, starting his Walleye tenure with a 3-0-0-0 record in his first three starts. Lemieux boasts a 1.98 GAA, standing as one of 12 ECHL netminders with a sub-two goals against average (min. 60 minutes played). Lemieux holds a .919 save percentage in his three games, the league’s seventh-best among goalies with at least 180 minutes on ice. Lemieux spent three seasons with the Kalamazoo Wings before signing with the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins, posting a .908 save percentage and 2.93 GAA in 108 games with the K-Wings. Lemieux needs just 31 more saves to hit 3,000 in his professional career.

Almost Home: The Walleye are set to play three games this week, starting with two in Kalamazoo against the Wings at Wings Event Center on Wednesday and Friday, and finishing on Saturday with the Fort Wayne Komets to kick off the home slate at the Huntington Center. Cooper Zech has scored four of his 14 career ECHL points against the Wings, including the only two-goal game of his career in his ECHL Debut in 2022. Marcus Crawford added an assist in Saturday’s game against Fort Wayne, his second point against Fort Wayne this season and the 14th of his career (1 G, 13 A) in 15 games against the Komets.
